2011 TRIPLE CROWN RACES (Entire Televised Broadcasts)
The 2011 Triple Crown season wrapped up just as it started, with a big bomb winning the Belmont Stakes when RULER ON ICE scored in the mud at 25-1. Never has a Triple Crown season seen more double digit winners than the current campaign. From the various prep races to the classics themselves, rarely did a favorite win a race. The 2011 Triple Crown season was for many an exercise in frustration. To begin with, last year's most prominent two-year-olds (notably champion UNCLE MO) were a virtual non-factor, the vast majority of them either injured or found wanting as three-year-olds. Major prep races were won by horses who were little known beyond their inner circle, while the Derby, Preakness and Belmont went to runners few gave serious consideration to at the time. The result was yet another inconclusive Triple Crown.
ANIMAL KINGDOM won a poll as the top three-year-old. His Derby victory was the strongest individual performance, and with a better start in the Preakness and Belmont, who knows how those races would have turned out. SHACKLEFORD ran bravely in all three classics and RULER ON ICE got to the finish line first in the Belmont. In the end, though, nothing has been decided for certain. It's now been 33 years since the last Triple Crown winner - the drought continues.
Other notable horses who ran in this year's Triple Crown were:
ARCHARCHARCH, STAY THIRSTY, MUCHO MACHO MAN, NEHRO, DIALED IN, MIDNIGHT INTERLUDE, ASTROLOGY, MR. COMMONS, KING CONGIE, BRILLIANT SPEED, PANTS ON FIRE, TWINSPIRED, MASTER OF HOUNDS, SANTIVA, SOLDAT, TWICE THE APPEAL, DECISIVE MOMENT, COMMA TO THE TOP, FLASHPOINT and many more!
The only good thing about an inconclusive Triple Crown is that it could make for a more interesting racing schedule over the rest of the year. Three-year-olds with championship aspirations will have to do more than they've done so far, which is potentially good news for the Travers and Haskell Invitational. It may even result in more three-year-olds being thrown in against their elders in the Woodward, Goodwood and Jockey Club Gold Cup.
