THOROUGHBRED CLASSICS: THE TRIPLE CROWN WINNERS w/BONUS FOOTAGE
In more than 100 years it's only been accomplished eleven times - the Triple Crown makes the name of a horse live on and it changes the lives of the people around the horse. A look at the first Triple Crown winner, SIR BARTON (1919) and those that followed are re-visited: GALLANT FOX (1930), OMAHA (1935), WAR ADMIRAL (1927).
The decade of the 1940's was that of unparalleled achievement as more Triple Crown winners were produced in this decade than in any other...four in all! The colorful, controversial, and charismatic WHIRLAWAY kicked off the decade in 1941(see highlights of all three of his Triple Crown races), in 1943 COUNT FLEET was the talk of the racing world and Texas-bred ASSAULT became the seventh Triple Crown winner in 1946. CITATION arrived at Calumet in the midst of an abundance of exceptional horses but from the onset he was something special - he would dominate racing in 1948 and became the sport's eighth Triple Crown winner...four Triple Crown winners in the 1940's and many felt CITATION was the best of the bunch.
It took 25 years for the next Triple Crown winner but in 1973 SECRETARIAT, a horse for the ages, more than a racehorse...more than a Triple Crown winner...a national icon! As a three-year-old SECRETARIAT appeared unbeatable in the Wood Memorial, his final tune-up for the Kentucky Derby...on 4/21/73 more than 43,000 turned out and everyone left dumbfounded as he placed third (see the stretch drive of this race). But he would redeem himself by winning the Triple Crown races - smashing all the record times in the process!
The 1970's would produce two more "Crowned Princes": SEATTLE SLEW in 1977, the only Triple Crown winner to enter the Triple Crown undefeated and AFFIRMED, who along with his pesky nemesis, ALYDAR, in 1978, would showcase the biggest rivalry in the history of the turf - AFFIRMED had become the eleventh Triple Crown winner by a combined margin of less than two lengths!
Some of the Triple Crown's finest moments can be yours!
AS AN ADDED BONUS...a superbly produced mini segment on the rich history of the Triple Crown, the winners and near-misses as featured on horse racing channel, HRTV's "Inside Information" series is included after the main feature ends.
