IN THE COMPANY OF HORSES
Running wild, cantering across a hillside, tearing up the turf; the beauty, charm and splendor of horses can distract from an impressive statistic. Horses are big business...the breeding, training, maintaining, riding, racing, showing and selling of the nation's $7 million horses contributes the sum of $112 billion a year to the U.S. economy.
One equine activity accounts for more than a quarter of the horse industry's good and services: horse racing. The engine that drives the sport is the champion Thoroughbred. Five times a year horse buyers and sellers from across the globe converge in Lexington, Kentucky, the Thoroughbred breeding capitol of the world...the attraction: the Keeneland auction...a premiere sale. Fourteen Kentucky Derby winners have been sold at Keeneland and finding another one is a consuming passion for auction dealers.
What is it about the Thoroughbred that lures huge crowds...speed, no doubt; but also a claim as the most beautiful horse in the world...a horse of proud bearing with great nobility. Those who are captivated by the magic of race horses believe their speed goes beyond a physical advantage. Many say the best Thoroughbred race horses possess an ephemeral quality...they call it heart; the unstoppable drive to win found in every true champion.
A great piece is shown on Golden Eagle Farm in California - training exercises and footage of their prize stallion, GENERAL MEETING and racing footage of his champion son, GENERAL CHALLENGE.
Other highlights include stories on the small but amazing, sturdy and versatile Icelandic Horse recently introduced into the U.S., horses' roles in the American cattle and logging industries, Monty Roberts' unique method of understanding equine nature, the re-birth of the once exterminated Nez Perce Indian War Horse and how the wild mustangs in Storey County, Nevada, rule as residents and members of the Virginia Range Wildlife Protection Association are committed to their survival - they believe the wild horses must remain a permanent part of the natural landscape.
This outstanding feature ventures from the grounds of the world's most famous racetracks to the streets of America's cities where horses play an important role in law enforcement; it takes an expansive look at the world of horses today. Go behind the scenes of a Thoroughbred auction; watch Monty Roberts and Pat Parelli demonstrate new training methods; learn of the new breed raised by the Nez Perce Indians; visit Storey County, Nevada, where wild mustangs still roam; and get an inside glimpse of Golden Eagle Farm from owner, Betty Mabee. The horse has always been a magical creature to those who love him; versatility, courage, and the ability to reciprocate human communication all contribute to the essence of what many believe is the greatest animal of all. A great feature for any horseman.
