THOROUGHBRED CLASSICS: THE SPINSTER STAKES
1956 was the first time they left the starting gate in the Spinster Stakes and Claiborne Farm's DOUBLEDOGDARE would go on to win this race and be named the three-year-old champion filly. The next two years' race was won by BORNASTAR and in 1959 by ROYAL NATIVE.
Spinster Stakes winners would usually use this race as a springboard for eventual year end championship honors. The 1960's produced seven Spinster winners who became champions beginning in 1961 with BOWL OF FLOWERS, PRIMONETTA in 1962, in 1963 LAMB CHOP rode to an 11-length victory, OLD HAT in 1964, OPEN FIRE in 1966, STRAIGHT DEAL in 1967 and the decade of the 60's ended with GALLANT BLOOM in the winner's circle.
SUSAN'S GIRL won two of these runnings in the 1970's and then in the late 1980's to the early 1990's, South American fillies trained by RON McANALLY would dominate the scene; first in 1989 and 1990 with Argentine sensation BAYAKOA and then by PASEANA.
A walk through time tracing the history of this historic race and the great champions who were a part of it. A virtual filly hall of fame!
