The Preakness is actually older than the Kentucky Derby by two years dating back to 1873; Pimlico racetrack is the second oldest track in the U.S. - only Saratoga has been around longer.
Looking back through the Preakness history books the race has seen its share of notable accomplishments: EDDIE ARCARO won a record six Preaknesses but the last two decades belong to PAT DAY who's made quite an impression on the race in a relatively short amount of time by winning five Preaknesses. The entire 1985 Preakness is shown as DAY just catches CHIEF'S CROWN at the wire with TANK'S PROSPECT.
Other races shown include SUMMER SQUALL overtaking UNBRIDLED in 1990, TIMBER COUNTRY over OLIVER'S TWIST and THUNDER GULCH in 1995 and LOUIS QUATORZE over SKIP AWAY and EDITOR'S NOTE in 1996 - the fastest Preakness run to date.
In the Spring of 1973, SECRETARIAT set the racing world on fire and his remarkable display of power is showcased with his "sudden leap forward" in the 101st Preakness when he breaks last but swings wide, sweeps past the entire field by the first turn and holds on to win with obvious ease going away! But after the race the surprises continued...Pimlico's teletimer recorded the running time as 1:55 - average by Preakness standards and glaringly sub-par for SECRETARIAT. Almost immediately there was a flag on the play...a veteran Daily Racing Form clocker hand-timed the race with a stopwatch - his watch said1:53-2/5 which if correct meant that SECRETARIAT had actually run 3/5 of a second faster than the track record set two years earlier by CANNONERO II. The timing snafu generated enough attention for the Maryland Racing Commission to admit the timer had malfunctioned and adjusted the time to 1:54-2/5 -still denying SECRETARIAT his official time and record...a controversy that still rages on to this day!
The feminist movement was full swing in 1980 as GENUINE RISK, racing's sweetheart and second-only filly Kentucky Derby winner in history, ran a controversial second-place finish to CODEX, ridden by rough-riding ANGEL CORDERO - the race result would set off enough fireworks to be remembered for years to come!
