TVG's LEGENDS: D. WAYNE LUKAS
In this installment, host Simon Bray sits down and has a candid conversation with bigger than life, Hall-of-Fame trainer, D. Wayne Lukas.
The Wisconsin native, Lukas, dabbled in horse racing as a kid and in the summers when he wasn't teaching or coaching basketaball. After a particularly productive summer at the track, he decided he could make a better living as a trainer than he could as a teacher and coach. So he moved to Oklahoma and took the Quarter Horse world by storm training 23 champions. In 1978 with a nudge from his son, Jeff, he switched to Thoroughbreds full-time; the results: 24 more champions, 18 Breeders' Cup winners, 13 Triple Crown victories and on...and...on and on. Simply put, he's the high profile man that the average man on the street knows when the subject turns to horse racing.
The charismatic and highly entertaining Lukas takes complete control of this fast and furious half-hour show revealing some of his silent auction techniques to planted spotters in the crowd at Keeneland, what type of conformation he looks for in a prospective horse purchase and the rating scale he uses, his big-name wealthy owners, how TABASCO CAT nearly killed his son Jeff unintentionally when he broke loose during training one day and ran into him nearly head-on...and so much more! Just a brief sampling of horses touched upon include DASH FOR CASH (champion Quarter Horse), EFFERVESCING, LANDALUCE, WINNING COLORS, GRAND CANYON, TABASCO CAT, GRINDSTONE, CAT THIEF, CHARISMATIC, LADY'S SECRET and CAPOTE.
When D. Wayne Lukas was at the height of his powers, he had divisions all over the country. You could walk to any backside to where there was a Lukas barn and you would not need a map or barn number. You could find it very simply by looking at the newest landscape barn. Whenever a Lukas barn arrived on a backside anywhere in America they brought in trees and re-shaped the entire area. And every assistant trainer was expected to wear a jacket and tie to the paddock. D. Wayne Lukas more than anyone else realized there's a lot of little steps that must be taken before you go to the big stage in horse racing.
A fascinating look into the career of a titan of the sport...make it yours today!
