For the second and final time, Chantilly hosted the 2017 Arc while its regular home, Longchamp in Paris, was being renovated. Chantilly proved itself a worthy host, and its backdrop of the Château de Chantilly and the Grandes Écuries, or Great Stables, a unique setting in sports.
The move to Chantilly was the first time the Arc was held outside of Paris since it was inaugurated in 1920. The only previous interruptions to the race's tenure at Longchamp happened during World War II. It was canceled in 1939 and 1940, and after a bombing happened during a race in April 1943, the Arc was held at nearby, and now defunct, Le Tremblay that October as well as in 1944.
The renovated Longchamp, which will be rechristened Paris Longchamp, is scheduled to reopen in April 2018.
The Arc is open to colts, fillies and mares who are 3 Years Old and Up. Because it was originally designed to serve as a showcase for French thoroughbred breeding, geldings were forbidden from running and that rule remains.
Arc weekend is easily the most international two days on the French racing calendar in terms of both equine participants and spectators. It typically attracts visitors from England, Ireland, Germany, Japan and the Middle East, among others, and is broadcast in 50 countries.
