ZENYATTA 20-RACE TIME CAPSULE (32 Hours!!)
The first-ever Breeders' Cup "Ladies' Day" in 2008 was capped by the coronation of a perfect queen. ZENYATTA remained undefeated for nine career starts and continued to amaze with her ability to lengthen stride and eat up ground and rivals upon command by jockey Mike Smith. Jockey Mike Smith predicted a day earlier that racing fans would witness something special when ZENYATTA competed in the 2008 Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic. What spectators saw that afternoon at Santa Anita was an undefeated filly that is not only adept at closing but does so with such a long and powerful stride she seems to glide effortlessly past the competition. She went on to top even that performance in the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic - blowing past a stellar field of males and instantly cementing her greatness for the ages.
Special doesn't begin to describe the Kentucky-bred daughter of STREET CRY. With her triumph in the 2008 Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic on Santa Anita's main track, ZENTATTA remained unbeaten through nine races and drew comparisons to some of the greatest fillies of all time, such as RUFFIAN, GENUINE RISK and PERSONAL ENSIGN. "I've never seen a horse go past other horses like this filly can," said Smith, 43, a Hall of Fame jockey who was aboard ZENYATTA for his second Breeders' Cup victory of the day. "She sets herself up to come on them, and she just blazes by them. I've been on other horses that have speed and can pass other horses, but none like her." ZENYATTA becomes only the second horse with at least eight victories to leave the Breeders' Cup with an unblemished record. PERSONAL ENSIGN retired unbeaten with 13 victories after winning the 1988 Breeders' Cup Distaff, which has been renamed the Ladies' Classic.
Owners Jerry and Ann Moss and trainer John Shirreffs, who had combined for a Kentucky Derby victory by Giacomo in 2005 and several other big wins, struggled to hold back tears as ZENYATTA blazed across the finish line in the 2008 Ladies' Classic. Jerry Moss especially got emotional when the crowd of 31,257 cheered and applauded loudly as Smith brought ZENYATTA back to the winners' circle. "She's a great star, and the people understand that," Moss said. "They gave her the respect she deserves, and that always gets to me."
The Mosses purchased ZENYATTA for $60,000 - a mere pittance for the now world's premier filly. ZENYATTA's 7-for-7 perfect 2008 season includes four Grade I victories. The West Coast star had earned all but one of her victories on synthetic surfaces. Coming back as a five-year-old, ZENYATTA gave official notice that she's STILL the Queen winning the 2009 Milady for the second time in addition to her scintalating 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic win running down the boys in her first race against the opposite sex in addition to running 1-1/4 miles for the first time - she made it look too easy! With that unforgettable win, she instantly was written into racing's history books - the FIRST FEMALE Breeders' Cup winner in 26 runnings!!
