BARBARO (HBO Documentary)
It's extremely rare that an athlete stirs the depth of emotion among people that BARBARO did and the general public was lucky enough to have a front-row seat to witness the rise of this remarkable horse to win the most prestigious event in Thoroughbred racing: the Kentucky Derby. Sadly, his throng of fans were also there to document why his subsequent struggle to live touched so many people. Emotional interviews with BARBARO's human connections deliver an often heartbreaking recollection of the late DYNAFORMER colt's turbulent journey after he shattered his right hind limb in the opening stages of the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore. They discuss how BARBARO was not only a terrific racehorse but also a once-in-a-lifetime animal who became an intricate part of their lives. Viewers will be steered through a visually captivating ride along BARBARO's meteoric rise to Kentucky Derby winner, including footage of each of his races and in-depth footage of his brilliant 6-1/2 length Derby victory and holds little back with gut-wrenching footage of his Preakness breakdown and the reaction of those in attendance on May 20 at Pimlico Race Course.
"BARBARO" is a compelling documentary exploring the triumph and tragedy of the Thoroughbred who captured the public's imagination; it traces BARBARO's significant accomplishments and harrowing setbacks. It revisits his shattering leg injury at the 2006 Preakness Stakes and subsequent medical treatments, as well as the resolute character of his eternally optimistic owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, and trainer Michael Matz. "BARBARO" allows viewers a glimpse into the hearts and minds of those closest to the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner who ultimately was euthanized January 29, 2007, when he became unable to bear weight on his acutely laminitic hind feet.
