AMERICAN HORSE & HORSEMAN Vol. IV w/ Lengthy SUPER BOWL Segment
Dale Robertson, host of 1973's American Horse & Horseman series, narrates this biographical mid-length documentary, "The Road to Duquoin", that follows the great trotter, SUPER BOWL, as he attempts victories in the last two legs of trotting's Triple Crown in the 1972 Hambletonian and Kentucky Futurity. Both heats in their entireties from both races are shown with original race calls including some post-race festivites footage too.
SUPER BOWL's chief rival was the gifted DELMONICA HANOVER, a filly handled by the veteran Delvin Miller. DELMONICA was second in both heats and trotted miles that would have been world filly marks in chasing SUPER BOWL. But she never really bothered the winner in each heat. SUPER BOWL and Dancer were simply the best. The Bill Haughton stable entry of FLUSH and SPARTAN HANOVER traded a pair of thirds with THE BLACK STREAK fourth in each heat.
In an unbelievable victory, SUPER BOWL sweeps both heats of the $56,210 Kentucky Futurity at the Red Mile in Lexington, Kentucky, despite the high improbability of sustaining flat tires on his sulky in each race caused by his major threat, SONGCAN. It was a "super" victory for SUPER BOWL, who swept all three legs of trotting's Triple Crown in 1972, the sixth horse to do so.
In addition to the lengthy segment on SUPER BOWL and Stanley Dancer, also included is a piece on Senator Thurston Morton of the American Horse Council discussing legislation needed to protect horses and the importance of floating a horse's teeth which shows 3-year-old thoroughbred filly, GENERAL IDEA, getting a thorough dental exam complete with teeth extractions and filing.
