2000 BREEDERS' CUP (Entire Televised Broadcast from CHURCHILL DOWNS)
If you like stunners, you'll love this edition of the Breeders' Cup, where several "wonder horses" finished out of the money and, in one race, dead last! Nonetheless, there were shining moments, a new record set by KONA GOLD and the emergence of TIZNOW as a horse that can run with the best of 'em.
1) DISTAFF - Can anyone beat the mighty RIBOLETTA, winner of seven straight graded stakes on the dirt? HERITAGE OF GOLD, LU RAVI, SPAIN, JOSTLE, SURFSIDE and defending champion BEAUTIFUL PLEASURE will try.
2) JUVENILE FILLIES - Three undefeated gals meet here in RAGING FEVER, XTRA HEAT and SHE'S A DEVIL DUE, along with CARESSING, stretch running CINDY'S HERO and speedy NOTABLE CAREER.
3) MILE - A tremendously talented field meets here, including LADIES DIN, European star INDIAN LODGE, KING CUGAT, DANSILI, AFFIRMED SUCCESS, WAR CHANT and NORTH EAST BOUND.
4) SPRINT - KONA GOLD was third here in 1998, second in 1999 in 1999, and is trying mightily to be first in 2000 to cement the Eclipse Award for sprinters. Trying to stop him will be a pair of talented three-year-olds in MORE THAN READY and TRIPPI, along with CALLER ONE and BET ON SUNSHINE. Looks like KONA GOLD - but who is that filly flying down the stretch? It's HONEST LADY! Can she catch the champ?
5) FILLY AND MARE TURF - Is the great European filly PETRUSHKA another PEBBLES? Hoping she's not will be TOUT CHARMANT, speedy TRANQUILITY LAKE, classy PERFECT STING, Beverly D heroine SNOW POLINA and CATELLA among others.
6) JUVENILE - A P VALENTINE is already being heralded as a future champ, but hoping to question that are POINT GIVEN, MACHO UNO, STREET CRY, ARABIAN LIGHT and undefeated West Coast speedball FLAME THROWER. What a race - there's MACHO UNO and POINT GIVEN hitting the wire together! Which one won?
7) TURF - Billed as a rematch of European sensations KALANISI and MONTJEU, but CIRO, MANNDAR, nine-year-old sentimental choice JOHN'S CALL and QUIET RESOLVE are all out to show the Europeans a thing or two! You'll enjoy a great three-horse stretch battle all the way to the wire!
8) CLASSIC - Is Kentucky Derby winner FUSIACHI PEGASUS really the best horse since SPECTACULAR BID? Can defending champion CAT THIEF pull off another shocker? Might it be 1999 Belmont winner LEMON DROP KID? How about Europe's best, GIANT'S CAUSEWAY, making his first start on the dirt? Or could the winner come from three-year-old speedballs CAPTAIN STEVE, ALBERT THE GREAT or TIZNOW?
Highlights include KONA GOLD setting a track and Breeders' Cup record in a sizzling 1:07:3, a special on new horse owners featuring the connections of SHE'S A DEVIL DUE, how FRANKIE DETTORI returned to greatness after a near-fatal plane crash and a horrible ride on SWAIN a few years back, and two wins by the great JERRY BAILEY after failing to get it done with a couple of chalks! In addition, you'll see history made with MARLON ST. JULIEN becoming the first black jockey in a Breeders' Cup race.
