WELL ARMED (2009 Dubai World Cup Winner)

This feature recounts the inspirational story of Bill Casner's faith in saving a seriously ill horse, eventual Dubai World Cup winner, WELL ARMED, which helped him cope with an unthinkable tragedy that befell his family. Casner grew up in Texas and had a life-long passion for the racetrack, which led him to an early career as a trainer. But after years on the road, Bill left training to spend more time with his family. Eventually, after a successful career in business, Casner got back into horseracing with his business partner, Kenny Troutt, and purchased a farm in Kentucky. WinStar Farm was born. (WinStar's success hit an apex this Triple Crown season, when a pair of its 3-year-olds - SUPER SAVER and DROSSELMEYER - captured the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, respectively.) Blessed with two daughters, Karri and Kayce, the Casners then experienced an unimaginable nightmare. In 2002, their daughters were traveling in Thailand, when the youngest, Karri, went on to the island of Bali by herself. On October 12, a popular nightclub district was attacked with a series of explosions, and Karri was among over 200 people killed in the worst act of terrorism in the history of Indonesia. Six months after Karri's death, and on what would have been her twenty-fourth birthday, a foal by TIZNOW was born at WinStar Farm, and Casner named him WELL ARMED - providing Bill and Susan with an emotional attachment. A well-regarded 3-year-old in 2006, WELL ARMED came off the Derby trail with a chip in the knee, and things went downhill rapidly. His life suddenly was in jeopardy after suffering a post-surgical injury. With a bleak prognosis, Casner personally undertook the rehabilitation of WELL ARMED at his ranch in Texas. For months, and against daunting odds, he set out to not only return the horse to the races, but to reach a racing pinnacle. That mission was accomplished, Casner's unrelenting faith rewarded when, in 2009, the homebred captured the $6 million Dubai World Cup by an incredible 14 lengths. After his daughter's death, Bill Casner and injured horse WELL ARMED defy all odds to scale racing's highest peak, the Dubai World Cup. The award-winning "Inside Information" will chronicle the poignant, emotional story with interviews from the Casners, as well as WELL ARMED's trainer, Eoin Harty, and Natanya Nieman, a WinStar veterinarian.
