LEGEND OF EDDIE ARCARO
Some of his greatest Derby rides are re-visited with film footage of LAWRIN, WHIRLAWAY, CITATION and HILL GAIL as he narrates throughout his thoughts and strategies of the races. Other highlights include rare footage of he and WILLIE SHOEMAKER before the highly publicized NASHUA/SWAPS match race and of the race itself, SWORD DANCER's Brooklyn Handicap, KELSO's narrow loss to TV LARK in the 1961 Washington International Turf at Laurel, his admiration for the horse, ASSAULT, and how he considered him in the top five horses he's ever ridden in his career and how he never received the recognition that he deserved due to his sterility and inability to produce offspring, DEDICATE's disqualification in the Atlantic City Invitational and BOLD RULER's Preakness.
Both his Triple Crown horses and their Triple Crown races are shown: witness WHIRLAWAY's tremendous run in the Preakness making up 30 lengths in a dramatic turn of foot and flying past horses as though they were standing still and winning by at least eight lengths going away and watch as ARCARO changes WHIRLAWAY's "come-from-behind" strategy and rushes, "MR. LONGTAIL", early in the Belmont and goes on to take flight. Next, CITATION's blistering Triple Crown trilogy is showcased.
After a 31-year career, ARCARO would retire on May 17, 1962, at Belmont Park - his two Triple Crown victories stand as a feat that may never be equaled with purses totaling over $30 million - long live the legend of EDDIE ARCARO, "The Master."
