NORTHERLY TRIBUTE (From TVN)
NORTHERLY, AKA the Fighting Tiger, was immensely talented but it was his never-say-die fighting spirit that endeared him to punters. That combination of brilliance and toughness saw the Fred Kersley-trained West Australian win 19 of 37 starts, including nine at the elite level.
A couple of Cox Plates (2001 and 2002), in which he beat champion mare SUNLINE, stand out as obvious highlights as does his 2002 Caulfield Cup triumph over fellow middle-distance star FIELDS OF OMAGH. The tenacious son of SERHEED also won two Australian Cups (2001 and 2003), both in utterly dominant fashion.
Highlights of several of his races include: the 2001 Caulfield Cup, 2001 Australian Cup, 2001 Feehan Stakes, 2001 Cox Plate, 2002 Orr Stakes, 2002 St. George Stakes, 2002 Australian Cup, 2002 Caulfield Cup, 2002 Cox Plate, 2003 Australian Cup, 2003 Ranvet Stakes and 2003 BMW Stakes.
"For me there will never be another NORTHERLY. He stands alone," Kersley said about his stable star. "The measure of NORTHERLY is the horses that couldn't beat him".
NORTHERLY sadly passed away on May 9, 2012; euthanized after a severe attack of colic - he was 16 years old.
