LESTER PIGGOTT: MY 12 GREATEST RACES
This nearly-extinct documentary is a personal selection by LESTER himself of his, "12 greatest races" - they may not be everyone's choice but they do demonstrate beyond any doubt that LESTER PIGGOTT is, "The Maestro".
LESTER himself narrates throughout the feature and fills the viewers in on important details, specifics, activities and the people involved in the races (owners and trainers); he talks about events and milestones in his remarkable career and even some of the circumstances surrounding controversial topics: his first suspension resulting in his eight-month absence from the track and his ground-breaking and then highly criticized creation of contract riding in a highly traditional institution.
He talks about his favorite horses - what made them the champions that they were (their strengths) and of their personalities and temperament and also about the different racing tactics he used for various races; includes the following races: NEVER SAY DIE's 1954 Epsom Derby, SIR IVOR's 1968 Washington DC International Turf, NIJINSKY II's 1970 St. Leger, ROBERTO and RHEINGOLD's desperate battle in the 1972 Epsom Derby, THE MINSTREL's 1977 King George featuring EXCELLER, ALLEGED's 1977 Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe, SAGARO's 1977 Ascot Gold Cup, MOORESTYLE's 1980 July Cup, CRITERION's 1982 Trident Chesterfield Cup, CIRCUS PLUME's 1984 Oaks, NICHOLAS winning at Chepstow on Lester's return in 1990 and ROYAL ACADEMY's Breeders' Cup Mile also in 1990.
