The audience gets a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse at the excesses and hazards of the horseracing world and the feature provides an insider's view of horse racing as well as an intimate glimpse of this resilient and legendary jockey, whose marveled 18-year career came to an abrupt halt in 1978 when a tumble from his horse during a race in New York left him a paraplegic. Since then, he has returned to live in Canada with his wife.
All these years later, Ron Turcotte continues to be idolized by fans of the Kentucky Derby and horse racing. When he attended the Derby in 2012, he signed autographs for four days straight, for hours at a time.
SECRETRIAT's legendary jockey Ron Turcotte is one of only a few jockeys to have won the prestigious American Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing; only three have won in the last 65 years. In 1973, this legendary jockey from New Brunswick rode SECRETRIAT - considered by many to be the greatest racehorse of all time to victory in the three most prestigious races in the United States. This is the remarkable story of Turcotte's rise to fame in 1973, the fall that instantly left him a paraplegic in 1978 after an illustrious 18-year career with more than 3,000 victories - and his emotional journey back to the people and places that marked his life. Featuring never-before-seen footage of SECRETRIAT and appearances by fellow Triple Crown winning jockeys Jean Cruguet (SEATTLE SLEW 1977) and Steve Cauthen (AFFIRMED 1978), as well as SECRETRIAT's owner Penny Chenery, this film takes the viewer deep into the thrilling and dangerous world of horseracing, where Turcotte remains an enduring source of inspiration. This engaging documentary road movie is a heartfelt story of an extraordinary jockey who to this day still dreams of riding down the stretch one last time.
