THOROUGHBRED (Animal Planet - Episode #1 - RUN FAST...DREAM BIG)w/BONUS FOOTAGE
Bonita Farm consists of 400-plus rolling acres and raises more than 150 Thoroughbreds a year. It's a 365-day / 24-hour-a-day job and you must be eternally optimistic to survive as much adversity as you face but horsemen by nature are that way. Bonita Farm is a family-owned hands-on operation...every member of the family is involved in one way or another to its day-to-day operation. Bill Boniface (owner) started the farm in 1963 on a wing and a prayer; he's still the head trainer but his three sons are taking their places in the family operation. The Boniface Family: three generations of horsemen and women all looking for that miracle of miracles: the champion racehorse.
The viewer gets an up-close and intimate look inside the day-to-day operations of a full-service Thoroughbred racing and breeding operation at Bonita Farm; the extreme highs and the lowest of lows are shown as the horses are born, raised, trained and shipped with high hopes to, "make it", on the racetrack.
Highlights include the Boniface Family not being strangers to winning...they've been at the very top in the winner's circle in a Triple Crown race when in 1983 their disregarded home-bred, DEPUTED TESTAMONY, took down the Preakness Stakes. See extended-length footage of the 1983 Preakness along with very rare footage of 21-year-old DEPUTED TESTAMONY (at the time this series first aired in 2001) still alive and kicking and the, "King of Bonita Farm", being pampered as he should be.
A privileged look behind the scenes at the high-stakes world of Thoroughbred horseracing. How are these high-strung, nearly mythical creatures trained? How many promising foals never make it to the races? And who are the people who dedicate their lives to producing champions? You'll soon find out everything it takes to get a horse to the track - a LOT of endless, hard work and a little luck. After watching this feature, the viewer will undoubtedly derive a greater appreciation for all the behind-the-scenes details involved in getting a horse to the track...not an easy task!
AS AN ADDED BONUS...a segment from horse racing channel, HRTV's "Inside Information" takes a closer look at Bonita Farm and its most famous resident the retired DEPUTED TESTAMONY, winner of the 1983 Preakness Stakes.
