2005 ECLIPSE AWARDS (Entire Televised Broadcast)
Eclipse Awards are bestowed upon the Thoroughbred horses and individuals whose outstanding achievements have earned them the title of Champion in their respective divisions. The Eclipse Awards are named after the great 18th Century racehorse and foundation sire ECLIPSE, who began racing at age five and was undefeated in eighteen starts, including eight walkovers. ECLIPSE sired the winners of 344 races, including three Epsom Derbies.
Thoroughbred racing's night of champions took place at the Regent Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, California, and Horse of the Year honors went to 2005 Breeders' Cup Classic winner SAINT LIAM. SAINT LIAM, owned by Mr. and Mrs. William Warren Jr., received the Eclipse Award over Three-Year-Old Champion AFLEET ALEX. SAINT LIAM was also voted Champion Older Male Horse of 2005. Now retired, SAINT LIAM was trained by Rick Dutrow Jr. and earned almost $3.7 million in 2005.
The winner of the 2005 Special Award, voted on by a panel of representaives from the three presenting organizatoins and previously announced were Cash is King, the owners of AFLEET ALEX. The Special Award is presented to honor outstanding individual achievements in, or contributions to, the sport of Thoroughbred racing.
Meanwhile, AFLEET ALEX's heart-stopping win in the 2005 Preakness, a triumph achieved despite a near catastrophic bumping incident, was voted the 2005 National Thoroughbred Racing Association Moment of the Year. AFLEET ALEX's Preakness received a whopping 82% of the vote, easily the most lopsided victory in any of the NTRA Moment of the Year elections.
Owned by Merv Griffin, STEVIE WONDERBOY, captured the Two-Year-Old Male Champion honors; he won the 2005 Breeders' Cup Juvenile and was the early favorite to win the 2006 Kentucky Derby. STEVIE WONDERBOY is trained by Doug O'Neill and earned more than $1 million in 2005; he was victorious in three of five starts in 2005.
ASHADO, 2004 Champion Three-Year-Old Filly, was voted the Eclipse Award as Champion Older Female. She was third in the Breeders' Cup Distaff in 2005 after winning the race in 2004. ASHADO is owned by Starlight Stable and was trained by Todd Pletcher.
Pletcher came away with the Eclipse Award as Champion Trainer for the second straight year. In 2005 Pletcher earned more than $20 million, establishing a new mark for conditioners.
Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner FOLKLORE was selected as Champion Two-Year-Old Filly; FOLKLORE is owned by Robert and Beverly Lewis and trained by D. WAYNE LUKAS.
The winner for 2005 Champion Three-Year-Old Filly was Mother Goose winner SMUGGLER who's owned by the Phipps Stable and trained by Shug McGaughey. Last year she won three of four starts, including the Coaching Club America Oaks.
The Three-Year-Old Harry Aleo owned LOST IN THE FOG was awarded 2005 Champion Sprinter after winning eight of nine starts last year under the conditioning of Greg Gilchrist.
LEROIDESANIMAUX took home the Eclipse Award winner as Champion Male Turf horse. He is owned by TNT Stud and Stonewall Farm, and trained by BOBBY FRANKEL. In 2005 LEROIDESANIMAUX won three of four starts for more than $1.2 million; he was second in the Breeders' Cup Mile to ARTIE SCHILLER, who was a close second for this honor.
INTERCONTINENTAL, winner of the 2005 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, was given the Eclipse Award winner as Champion Female Turf runner; she is owned by Juddmonte Farm and trained by BOBBY FRANKEL. INTERCONTINENTAL earned more than $1.2 million in 2005, winning five of seven starts.
The 2005 Eclipse Award winner as Champion Steeplechaser was McDYNAMO. The gelding won the Breeders' Cup Steeplechase and the Colonial Cup for owner Michael Moran and trainer Sanna Hendriks.
JOHN VELAZQUEZ repeated as Champion Jockey of the Year. He easily outdistanced EDGAR PRADO in the voting. Third was Hall of Famer JERRY BAILEY, who concluded his riding career the end of January, 2006.
The Eclipse Award winner as Outstanding Apprentice Jockey was Emma-Joyce Wilson; the Canadian won 174 races and earned $6.1 million.
MICHAEL GILL finally received his much-deserved and overdue award for Outstanding Owner for 2005.
Adena Springs was again voted the Outstanding Breeder for 2005.
PENNY CHENERY, whose captivating charm and enthusiasm as the owner and breeder of 1973 Triple Crown winner SECRETARIAT earned her the unofficial title of, "First Lady of Racing", was honored for her outstanding lifetime achievements in Thoroughbred racing by being presented the 2005 Eclipse Award of Merit. CHENERY has been widely recognized as racing's goodwill ambassador and has also been very active in Thoroughbred causes and foundations. The Eclipse Award of Merit is presented to an individual or entity displaying outstanding lifetime achievement in, and service to, the Thoroughbred industry.
The Eclipse Awards are presented by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, National Turf Writers Association and the Daily Racing Form. The Eclipse Awards give us a chance to reflect on the best equine and human performances of the year; the goal is to tell the stories behind the most pivotal moments and players in Thoroughbred racing and make the viewer feel as though he or she is right there in the room with the athletes and others who make our sport great!
