Some of the Derby's most memorable moments are revisited: the 1978 meeting between AFFIRMED and ALYDAR in the Derby had been anticipated by racing fans across the country all through Spring and they weren't disappointed...FOOLISH PLEASURE would take the roses in 1975, The odds-makers dismissed FERDINAND at 17-1 in the 1986 Derby but the Hall of Fame jockey/trainer team of WILLIE SHOEMAKER and CHARLIE WHITTINGHAM was a winning combination!
The SUNDAY SILENCE/EASY GOER rivalry of 1989 is legendary...and it all started in that years Kentucky Derby - SUNDAY SILENCE would take the first round giving his trainer, CHARLIE WHITTINGHAM, his second Derby win of the decade.
Despite all his credentials Hall of Fame Trainer JACK VANBERG was 0-4 coming into the 1987 Kentucky Derby with ALYSHEBA. ALYSHEBA went to the post as the betters' sixth choice but what will always be remembered is the stretch drive and ALYSHEBA's remarkable recovery when he clipped heels with BET TWICE. In the heat of battle, ALYSHEBA stumbled and fell to his knees, regained his composure and went on to win - an amazing feat!
It took almost 50 years as an owner for 92-year-old Mrs. Francis Genter to finally get her bouquet of roses in 1990 with her horse, UNBRIDLED; it was one of the most emotional and touching moments in sports television and Derby history...she became the oldest owner ever to win the Kentucky Derby.
No one symbolized the, "Sport of Kings", more than owner/breeder PAUL MELLON and his Derby time came in 1993 - he became the first owner/breeder in history to win the three most prestigious races in the world - England's Epsom Derby, France's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and now the U.S.' Kentucky Derby with SEA HERO.
But SECRETARIAT's record-breaking performance in the 1973 Derby still ranks at the top of the list...thank you SECRETARIAT for the memories!
