THOROUGHBRED CLASSICS: THE BREEDERS' CUP TURF
The Breeders' Cup Turf gives racing's championship day a truly international flavor and some of the best stories to come out of the race are re-visited: FRANKIE DETTORI came into the 1999 Breeders' Cup riding high on 8-5 favorite, DAYLAMI, at Gulfstream - his 2-1/2 length win was the longest in the race's history!
BILL MOTT and ALLEN PAULSON are best known as the men behind CIGAR but eight years before CIGAR lit up the competition PAULSON and MOTT took to their first Breeders' Cup success in the 1987 Turf with a horse who had a knack for drama - THEATRICAL. THEATRICAL was the 8-5 favorite but also in the field was TREMPOLINO, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner - sometimes such international match-ups never materialize as hoped but this one exceeded all expectations as the two colts locked horns from the start and battled the entire stretch drive. THEATRICAL's win would just be the beginning...alone or in partnership, PAULSON and his wife, MADELINE, would eventually win eight Breeders' Cup races.
In 1989 one of trainer, NEIL DRYSDALE's, most promising pupils was PRIZED - it was decided PRIZED was too immature for the Triple Crown so DRYSDALE patiently waited for summer and struck an upset blow heard around the country...it was a stunning outcome. SUNDAY SILENCE, that year's Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, the1-5 favorite was home-free in the Swaps Stakes...or so it seemed until PRIZED caught him at the wire going away...the crowd gasped. PRIZED was steadily improving but in a change of strategy to avoid EASY GOER and SUNDAY SILENCE in the Breeders' Cup Classic, DRYSDALE rolled the dice and switched PRIZED with a solid dirt pedigree to the turf - his gamble paid off as PRIZED took on the world's best in the 1989 Breeders' Cup Turf and won! Racing on grass for the first time in the world's richest grass race and as a three-year-old facing older horses...PRIZED earned a special place in Breeders' Cup Turf history.
The Breeders' Cup wouldn't be the same without our international friends- considering the travel, climate and racing adjustments, foreigners have done remarkably well in the Breeders' Cup Turf: the Aga Khan's 53-1 long-shot LASHKARI in 1984, PEBBLES...England's super-filly holding on over STRAWBERRY ROAD in 1985, IN THE WINGS in 1990 and MISS ALLEGED in 1991.
The rich history of the Breeders' Cup Turf can be yours!
