THOROUGHBRED CLASSICS: THE BREEDERS' CUP JUVENILE FILLIES
This documentary looks back at some of the exciting young ladies and some of their escorts on their big day...but if you like surprises, no Breeders' Cup division has had a more surprising beginning than the inaugural Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filly race. Chaos reigned as the fillies entered the stretch and winner, FRAN'S VALENTINE, earned her place in Breeders' Cup history as she was the first and to date the only horse to ever be disqualified in a Breeders' Cup race.
Every year horses from around the world target the rich Breeders' Cup as a primary goal; the sport is so competitive and unpredictable that no one man could ever dominate the races or even a particular race. But in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, Hall of Fame trainer, D. WAYNE LUKAS, has come close - he has saddled four winners: 1985 - TWILIGHT RIDGE, 1988 - OPEN MIND, 1994 - FLANDERS (whose stretch run with stable mate SERENA'S SONG turned in one of the most spellbinding runs in Breeders' Cup history) and 1999 - CASH RUN. But even that fact doesn't do justice to his overall record in this race; one year LUKAS-trained fillies took first, second and third place and on two other occasions his horses finished first and second. Going into the 2001 Breeders' Cup, LUKAS has started 37 horses in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies! LUKAS' strength in numbers strategy has worked with spectacular results as his legend has become synonymous with the race.
In 1990 the spotlight was on MEADOW STAR - the first undefeated horse to win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. She was the embodiment of a champion...she had both devastating speed and patience. Another great Breeders' Cup story centers on a filly who was not only undefeated as a two-year-old...she never lost a race in her entire career!
PERSONAL ENSIGN's resolute victory in the Breeders' Cup Distaff in 1988 enabled her to retire with a perfect thirteen-for-thirteen record. She was also successful in the breeding shed as her daughter, MY FLAG, sired by champion, EASY GOER, carried the PHIPPS' family colors to the wire in the 1995 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filly - like her mother seven years before, MY FLAG rallied late over a muddy track to prevail. With a powerful stable dating back five decades, OGDEN PHIPPS is one of the last aristocratic horse owners.
By contrast, Cot Campbell's Dogwood Stable represents a new generation of Thoroughbred ownership; Dogwood purchases young horses and then divides investment shares among numerous owners. In 1996 Dogwood partners had a chance to celebrate when STORM SONG ran away with the trophy.
Of course, no one has had more fun at the races than MIKE PEGRAM; the McDonald franchise owner whose brief involvement in the Thoroughbred game has been remarkably fortunate - in 1998 PEGRAM and trainer, BOB BAFFERT, were graced with Champion Two-Year-Old filly, SILVERBULLETDAY, who took that years filly Breeders' Cup Juvenile. In 1997 COUNTESS DIANA gave a dazzling performance in the race - her winning margin of 8-1/2 lengths is the largest in Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filly's history and her time of 1:42 for the 1-1/16 mile is another Juvenile Filly race record.
From in its initial running, it was apparent that this race would have a stubborn streak of unpredictability as not every winner was a lopsided favorite who overwhelmed the opposition. Long-shot EPITOMY won the race in 1987 at 30-1, in 1999 CASH RUN paid a whopping $67 in a LUKAS-engineered upset. But the biggest shocker occurred in 2000 when CARESSING paid $96 to win on a $2 bet.
The Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filly has been the definition of a championship race and every year adds to its rich history.
