The third running of the Pegasus World Cup Invitational was headlined this year by ACCELERATE and his rival CITY OF LIGHT. The industry leading thoroughbred invitational was contested on January 26, 2019, at the Stronach Group's premier destination, Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida, and lived up to all the hype and grandeur not only for the whopping $9 million purse money but especially the widespread interest of the newly crowned 2018 Older Male Horse of the Year, ACCELERATE and his upcoming equal, CITY OF LIGHT, as both horses' swan song would be in this race before both heading off to the same breeding shed at Lane's End.
This year also marked the first running of the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational which attracted a truly international field with the likes of Japan's filly extraordinaire AERROLITHE and Aiden O'Brien's filly, MAGIC WAND.
The Pegasus World Cup Invitational is the vision of The Stronach Group founder, Frank Stronach, and exemplifies The Stronach Group's commitment to modernizing and elevating the sport of thoroughbred horse racing for the next generation of fans, while providing unique and lucrative opportunities for thoroughbred owners. The Stronach Group is committed to providing a deeper experience to existing fans and racing enthusiasts with exciting new events such as the innovative Pegasus World Cup Invitational which is contested at 1-1/8 miles on the dirt, is restricted to twelve (12) horses and is the first event of its kind in horse racing. Twelve (12) owners reserve a spot in the starting gate for $1 million. They can race, lease, share a starter, or sell their place in the gate. The owners will share equally in the net income from betting, media rights and sponsorships.
