TRIPLE CROWN CHALLENGE (ESPN)
Every sport has an ultimate challenge, a goal that by its degree of difficulty seems to most unattainable. In the Sport of Kings, it's the Triple Crown challenge. The odds are astronomical that a young foal, no matter how well bred, will be good enough, sound enough and even lucky enough to make it into the starting gate at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May for the Kentucky Derby. Then can he come back in just two weeks at Pimlico in Maryland at the Preakness Stakes with its tighter turns and shorter distance? And then after that, what's left for the test of a champion is the challenge of the 1-1/2 miles in the Belmont Stakes. Through the years only eleven Thoroughbred have won the crown out of 24 who have come to the Belmont with that chance. To win one of the classics makes you part of racings history - to win all three races in the Triple Crown challenge makes you a legend! This documentary looks back at past Triple Crown winners (with major emphasis on the winners on the decade of the 70's: SECRETARIAT, SEATTLE SLEW and AFFIRMED) and those that fell short in their attempt at racing immortality (SPECTACULAR BID, PLEASANT COLONY, ALYSHEBA and SUNDAY SILENCE). Narrated by Chris Lincoln of ESPN.
