WINX SPECIAL GALLOP at RANDWICK w/VIDEO CAM & INTERVIEWS (2/17/18)
WINX ran around for free but trainer Chris Waller was delighted with the exercise, claiming his champion mare’s special gallop at Randwick on 2/17/18 had her ready for her racing return on March 3rd. Instead of running for the $250,000 stakes and the group 2 status of the Apollo Stakes, WINX was matched-up over the same 1400-metre against five of her stable mates and she duly thumped them. Partnered by jockey Hugh Bowman, who could not have ridden the mare in the Apollo because of a careless riding suspension, WINX was only unleashed late and she ran clear to win by several lengths in a performance that forced a wide smile to Waller’s face. "Race conditions are pretty hard to simulate but it was pretty close (to a race) today," Waller told Sky Racing after the trial. "I think in two weeks time we’ll have a horse ready to run a mile race." WINX, who ran her final 200 metres in 11.43 seconds, races for her 23rd consecutive victory in the group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes over 1600 metres on March 3rd.
The entire trial race is shown with all the pre-race pomp of a real race including interviews, the lead-up to the race, the entire race and also after-race footage; at the very end, Hugh Bowman was fitted with a camera and microphone for this race which gives the viewer an authentic feel for being right there.
